As many as 3,000 hours of annual ice time expected to be added

Calgary took another stride forward in reducing the city's need for more available ice surfaces when another new arena was opened in southwest Calgary today.

The newly-named Flames Community Arenas add a third rink to the two that were formerly known as the Calgary Centennial Arenas.

Record numbers for annual event

The 41st annual Esso Minor Hockey Week, which runs until January 29, kicked off Thursday night at the new Winsport Canada arenas at Canada Olympic Park.  

It signalled the commencement of the largest minor ice hockey tournament in the world, which is bringing together 649 teams and over 12,000 players aged 7-21.

Calgarians show up in spite of horribly cold weather

Despite bitterly frigid temperatures, it was a day for celebration at Canada Olympic Park on Saturday afternoon.

Hundreds of Calgarians braved the cold and flocked to Canada Olympic Park for the unveiling of the first phase of WinSport Canada’s 500,000 sq.ft. athletic and ice complex.
