Organizations work together to provide food and smiles for those in tough times

The lyrics of Bobby Darin’s “Simple Song of Freedom” sifted warmly through the florescent-lit gymnasium of Calgary’s downtown Knox United Church. Twinkling lights adorned the plain concrete walls while wafts of savory ham, stuffing and mixed vegetables danced lightly past the noses of hundreds of Calgary’s less fortunate.

Annual competition between police and fire departments is all in the name of fun

As February begins, the city’s fire and police departments are wrapping up their ninth annual Sirens for Life Blood Drive with their Canadian Blood Services partner.

According to Conor Tapp from Canadian Blood Services, the challenge, which is held between Calgary and Edmonton, is an important event that sets the tone for blood donation for the rest of the year.

Wake up at 5:15 a.m. Hit snooze, but only once. Bundle up – it’s cold outside. Out the door by 7:00 a.m. Catch the Number 3 bus. Drop off your 8-year-old daughter at school. Back on the bus to get downtown. Wait for the C-Train. By now the caffeine has kicked in. Almost to the station. Check your watch. Don’t want to be late. Still have to catch another bus and be at work by 9 a. m. ....
